Attack on Ammos (Humans)

Post by Servius on Sun Apr 08, 2018 2:49 pm

"What out for the--" A quill struck the woman before she could finish her sentence. The small group of children she had been leading to safety screamed and cried. Their wails were drowned out by the frantic shouts of the adults scrambling for weapons or cover. Above the searing desert sands, casting a shadow over the settlement, was a Manticore. Servius Eirene Koinonia had chosen Ammos as his next hunting ground. With all the monsters around, The Manticore now had to compete for his favorite meal. The larger cities would be better equipped to deal with Servius, so he stuck to the villages and refugee camps like Ammos. He killed what he planned on eating now. So far, that was a total of 20. His new playthings were tossed into a makeshift cage comprised of his quills. Servius always liked a group to toy with before eating. Somehow it made them taste better. Was it fear? Contentment with their fate? Servius landed in the center of the camp, a humanoid snack impaled on the end of his scorpion tail. The biped was hardly alive but still managed to plead for mercy. That mercy came in the form of The Manticore's teeth. The winged lion roared as a group of brave--or perhaps insane--humans ran up, their weapons raised. Servius' tail lashed to and fro, his claws raked the sand. The quills on his tail quivered and saliva dripped from his bared teeth in anticipation of a meal. The group of five looked at each other nervously but gathered their courage and charged forward...

Once Súl heard what was happening, he quickly ran back home to be sure El was ok. Thankfully, she had stayed hidden inside so far. The Marksman of Ammos was quick to grab every arrow he had, and his bow. The young girl had grabbed a sword, but was stopped by her father.

”You’re staying here, El.”

“But”

”That’s not a request young lady. Stay here. Stay safe. Understood?” The girl just sighed.

“Yes sir.” Súl patted his daughter’s head before running out.

He stayed low for most of run until finally moving to the roof of a building with decent cover. He peered out, half wishing the manticore wasn’t who he saw.

”Servius?” The archer quickly knocked a sleep arrow, and aimed right for the manticore’s side. He waited for just the right moment, then released before quickly knocking another sleep arrow.

Re: Attack on Ammos (Humans)

Post by Servius on Tue Apr 10, 2018 10:33 pm

As The Manticore devoured the first of the pitiful five man group, he felt something strike his side. Servius looked at his left flank and found a tiny arrow. Such feeble human weapons were no match for the winged lion. He paid no mind to it as he swiped at a snack and plunged his scorpion stinger into another. The morsels in the makeshift cage huddled together in the center, thinking The Manticore's quills held poison like his tail.

"How will we get out of here?" a distraught woman asked.

"We won't, so stop whining." A man paced about, snapping at anyone who asked such questions.

"Leave her be. She's just scared. We all are," another man said.

"We at least have to find a way to get the children out."

Another poor soul was dropped into the huddle as Servius flew by. The winged beast looked down on the camp, searching for more prey. The keen eyes of the feline spotted something familiar. The only biped that had escaped his claws. Servius roared and flew toward the building it was on. His claws were outstretched, ready to grasp the mouse if it didn't move away in time.

Súl looked up in shock as Servius dove down at him. The marksman quickly jumped out of the way of the massive feline, and quickly aimed at him. He soon let the arrow fly before yelling out in the dragon’s language.

”I hope you weren’t thinking Ammos would be an easy target Servius!” As he said this, the Dragon Tongue quickly knocked another sleep arrow and aimed it at Servius.

The rodent escaped the claws of The Manticore just in time. Servius growled as he glided away from the building. Another insect collided with his pelt. The winged lion flicked it off with his tail. The marksman's words fell on literal deaf ears. Servius came back around to the building, launching a quill at the human.

Súl quickly hid behind a wall, hoping it could stop the quill. After the quill did whatever it would do, the man turned and fired another sleep arrow before ducking into a building.

The biped jumped from the roof just in time. The quill struck where the marksman had just been, leaving a small crater. The end of it would probably have breached the structure. The tiny creature loosed another arrow at Servius before running to hide in another building. The Manticore shifted his course just slightly to avoid the miniscule stick and landed outside the building. Backing up some, The Manticore rammed his body against the human-built structure. With the great strength his species was known for, he brought it down in two strikes. He was not going to allow his prey to cower... like prey. It bored him. "Face me, biped, if you survived. Die with some dignity." The winged lion backed away from the rubble and waited to see if the frail being had escaped. Meanwhile, another group of men and women brave enough to try fighting the poison tailed feline made their way over.

Súl has quickly ran out of the building the moment Servius started ramming it, but made sure he was unseen. He knotted and drew his fourth sleep arrow. He had already landed two hits. How many arrows could a manticore take anyway? What ever the number, at least the arrows should slow Servius down. The marksman quickly popped out of hiding and fired at the feline’s side, hoping he wouldn’t see it coming.

Re: Attack on Ammos (Humans)

Post by Alyär Iris Iza Draekus on Sun May 06, 2018 5:21 pm

Alyar hadn't initially had the intention of getting into a fight. No, rather, quite the opposite. She had been visiting Ammos for several reasons, only some of which were related to her company. As she had reached the pitiful city, several guards following her, she had heard the screams and cries of those beneath the city. It didn't take long for her to spot the shape of the manticore. She narrowed her eyes.

A manticore, eh? Child's play. she thought softly to herself. She glanced back at her men. They seemed startled. Of course. It seemed she had hired nothing but cowards. She scoffed at them getting their attention, and quickly snapping them back to reality.

"Galian, Maverick, take the papers somewhere safe. Charlemagne, Casper, Gwindel, go protect the citizens. I will be right back," Alyar said softly, waving her hand as if beckoning them to go fetch her a glass of tea, rather than risking their lives to save a potentially doomed refuge from a massive, monstrous cat.

The men would have protested, had they not known the woman they were hired to. They simply nodded, and ran off to do their jobs. Alyar, on the other hand, calmly walked down to the refuge.

Alyar's initial duty had been to meet an accomplice near here, and perhaps provide some charity to a few... special citizens related to a few of her donors. But now it seemed like plans had been altered.

Alyar turned a bend, looking up at the beast quietly. She walked with no rush, watching as humans fled around her. When she got close enough, she noticed several men were trying, and failing, to knock the beast down. One, she spotted in a flash, seemed to be more competent than the others... but still.

Useless... she thought.

Considering her clothing, her relative calmness, and the fact her icy blue eyes were watching the manticore, she doubted it would take long for the beast to notice her unusual aura. She waited, making sure to stay just out of swiping distance, in case he were to head straight for her.

Beneath her, a faint, blue circle appeared at her feet, barely visible to the untrained eye.

Re: Attack on Ammos (Humans)

Despite the refugee camp being home to all walks of life, Ammos seemed to lack any who knew how to formulate a decent plan of attack against the Manticore. How fortunate, then, that two such people just happened to be in the camp at the time of the attack. Their collective knowledge of Manticores was smaller than a single grain of sand, but at the very least, they could give the winged lion a real challenge. The Pride of Kryo and the Blood Queen of Gynaikes--Svadilfare Natura-Avedon and Nari Taloe--had come to Ammos on their way to Brysur ((anyone who has read my latest Read Only for Svad, congrats, you are now part of a side plot in that story)). They had been here only a few hours, since the prior evening, when The Manticore arrived.

"I know that beast," Svadilfare had told Nari when they saw it flying overhead. "I ran into it once before." Nari knew she couldn't show up in Brysur without Svadilfare, else she would never see her share of the coin for their job, let alone be hired. So she went along with it when the Kryoan said they had to stay and help. As they followed the movements of the Manticore, the assassin duo helped people get to safety.

"So what's the plan here, Leo? I thought we were going to fight that thing. There's plenty of people around to help the weaklings."

Svad shot her a look as he handed a crying child off to her father. "Then by all means, just run up to him and have at it. I'll make sure it is known the best of Gynaikes died in the maw of a giant cat."

"You'd love that, wouldn't you?" Nari began climbing up one of the few stone buildings to get a glimpse of the area the Manticore had landed in. There were a few places the pair could approach from and go unnoticed as long as the beast wasn't looking in that direction.

"Immensely!" Svadilfare called after her. He took a moment to make sure there was no one else around that needed assistance then climbed up to the roof with Nari. "We have a path?"

Nari only nodded in response.

"Then we require only a plan of attack. Any ideas?"

"Mm, I thought you were a great warrior, and the chief's son at that. Surely if anyone could come up with a plan..."

"I never said I didn't have one. I'm just open to suggestions. This isn't shadow work, but it might help to approach it that way. And seeing as that is your area of expertise..."

Nari looked at him, almost grinning. "Leo, are you asking me for help? Or are you admitting finally that I am the better assassin?"

"Nari, I wouldn't name you the better assassin if your life depended on it. And stop calling me Leo."

"You're a terrible liar, Leo. There's no shame in admitting it. I am flattered that you would forever tarnish your good name just to save me."

Svad reached for his knife but Nari jumped down, laughing as she landed on the packed sand. The warrior made a mental note to finally kill Nari in her sleep as he followed. They made their way across the mostly tent city of Ammos, sticking close to the edges to avoid detection as long as possible. Along the way, they stopped to help who they could and give brief comfort to the passing. Soon, they reached the winged lion and the latest group to challenge it. Svad also noticed a man wielding a bow.  "Sul?" Svadilfare tapped Nari's shoulder and directed her to follow him. "Sul, what are you doing here?"

_____________

Servius didn't see that the marksman had left the building before it came down. His eyes scanned the rubble for the biped. Seeing no movement, The Manticore turned away. He then felt something--not the arrow Sul would launch at him, but something with a bit more sting to it. Servius looked down to see two of a group of bipeds hitting his paws with axes. He raised the paw and brought it back down on  them. The other three ran off, not wanting to suffer a similar fate. Servius resumed his search for the arrow-firer. "Where are you, biped? Accept your fate. All shall fill the belly of Servius Eirene Koinonia." The scorpion tailed winged lion's deep voice rumbled over the sands like thunder. The Manticore turned to look in a different direction and noticed the female. She was dressed like some sort of nobility. Perhaps even they needed to flee their homes and take refuge in Ammos. This one seemed to have a death wish, for it walked right up to Servius, walked when others ran, be it toward him or away. The feline's eye caught the circle beneath the morsel's feet but thought little of it at the moment. Servius growled, his tail lashing, the stinger eager to plunge into another mouse."You would challenge me, plaything? You will fail as all have failed, for no biped can match The Manticore."

Súl was preparing to fire another sleep arrow when he heard the familiar voice. He turned to see his friend Svadilfare, and someone else. He had his facecloth up, but there was a smile underneath.

”Well, I’m not called the Marksman of Ammos for nothing. Better question is, what are you two doing here?” The Dragon’s Tongue then heard what Servius said and fired another sleep arrow at the manticore’s hide. He then looked back at the pair. ”The big cat’s Servius by the way, if you’re curious. Oh, and who are you miss.”

It was then that Súl noticed the woman walking in the open TOWARDS the manticore! Was she nuts! Servius wasn’t a laughing matter. It took a dragon saving his human butt to keep him alive the first time. He just hoped El was staying safe.

Re: Attack on Ammos (Humans)

Post by Alyär Iris Iza Draekus on Sat May 12, 2018 1:17 pm

It seemed that Alyar was not the only one whom had attracted the beast's attention. Several other humans were daring to attack him, and they were quick to suffer the same fate as the other puny creatures. But, in the corner of her eye, Alyar noticed several other humans appear. Alyar's eyes twinkled as she watched them. It would seem that not all here were ill prepared.

Regardless, Alyar was pretty confident in her own abilities. She took a tentative step back, several meters, actually, continuing to keep a careful watch on the Manticore. "A challenge, you say? Why sweetheart, you'd hardly offer a game." she said cockily, smirking over at him. She'd reach behind her, pulling out a bow and arrow, and aiming at the Manticore's head, knocking the arrow and firing.

This was not intended to hurt him, though. Moreso, to alert him of he pressence.

Now, all she had to do was wait, her body glowing a faint blue.

Servius watched as the female produced a bow and arrow. What did she hope to achieve? The other had not succeeded with such puny weaponry; did she think herself an exception? The Manticore could see she was aiming for his head. He didn't bother to move. His tail swayed but made no move to intercept the arrow. His keen eyes noticed the blue at her feet had spread to the rest of the body. "What magic is this, biped? Will it shield you from my claws? Lessen the pain of my teeth?"

"Nari Taloe," the Gynaikes woman replied, "and never call me Miss."

"We just stopped here on our way to Brysur. Servius..." Svadilfare looked up at The Manticore. "We've met before. I don't think arrows will be enough to stop that thing, Sul. We need a more... hands on approach."

Súl looked surprised when the woman seemed to use magic, but quickly turned his attention to Svad and Nari. "You know him? Well I can tell you Nightwing venom doesn't work, but I would really like to hear this 'hands on approach."

((This is sad post.))

Re: Attack on Ammos (Humans)

Post by Alyär Iris Iza Draekus on Fri May 25, 2018 5:57 pm

Alyar growled at the creature's refusal to chase her. Well, she supposed she had expected far too little of him. She had jumped too quickly to conclusions based on the seamless destruction he had been wrecking on the village. She also had not expected him to pick up on her magic. Then again, not very many humans glowed. So she supposed that this was normal. Not that they expected much of her. So she still had the element of surprise.

But she would play this cat's game. He was certainly acting smarter than she had anticipated. She scoffed at the cat, drawing another arrow, "Magic? What magic?" she asked, almost in a taunting mannerism, as she fired another arrow at Servius. The light surrounding her began to die down, though she certainly wasn't lowering her guard.

She was growing impatient.
