Post by Sythyry on Mon Aug 31, 2015 4:49 pm

Personal Info
Sythyry: Draft of a Dragon Dragon__freedom_scape_by_theguardiandragon
(Copyright TheGuardianDragon)
Name: Sythyry
Alias: -
Age: 43 dragon years = 1290 human years
Gender: female
Sexuality: Pansexual.

Personality:

Sythyry is an unimposing little dragon, often cheerful, often snarky and
self-mocking. She is quite book-smart, but a bit on the socially clueless
side. She is unaggressive, and loses most fights. Two years ago she declared
two life-goals: developing a fancy breath-to-snakes spell, and marrying
Arilash. The former has been accomplished, the latter has utterly failed, and
so Sythyry is flailing around trying to figure out what to do next.

Interests:
Sythyry is a foodie: she likes to cook (creatively) and eat.
Sythyry is a scholar, interested particularly in math, biology, and magic.
Sythyry is a bit of a fop, dressing and/or decorating herself perhaps too much.

Dislikes:
- Sythyry dislikes fighting.
- Sythyry dislikes licorice.
- Sythyry dislikes EarthWings. She tries to be polite though. (Getting to be
friends with one could make a sensible plot arc.)

Fears:
- Sythyry is easily upset by social disapproval.
- Sythyry is afraid of being stepped on by someone larger again.
- Sythyry is afraid of having children.

General Appearance
Height: 25' — about as small as lightwings get.
Scales: Fine scales, except for heavier belly scutes.  Lightwings are
color-shifters; Sythyry's preferred day-to-day coloration is purple-orange
with ripples of crimson: puzzled/confused with ripples of embarrassment.
Eyes: Purple.  Always.
Appearance: Sythyry is often relatively dressed: jewelry, feather
headdresses, saddlebags containing writing tools, foods, and sometimes a
telescope or prism or something.
Tail ends in six short blunt transverse spikes; Sythyry often mounts some sort of ornament on them, often a foot-wide silvered crescent.
Body shape: kind of chubby for a LightWing.
Coloration: often polychrome and gaudy, shifting constantly to reflect mood and meaning. See the RP sample for how that works.  When she's not using light effects, she's medium grey.

Tribe Information and Status
Tribe: Lightwing
Rank: Scholar
Family: A small and undistinguished family who live a long way off and
are probably never going to be mentioned again.
Mate: N/A
Hatchlings: N/A

Skills and Abilities
Strengths:

Some nifty light-based spells (see below).  If she has a reputation at all,
it's as a creative mage.

Fast and nimble by LightWing standards: top 10-20% in each.

Very sharp scalpelly claws, when she's had a chance to sharpen them.

High pain tolerance.

Spell List

Seven Spectral Serpents: The LightWing caster breathes a beam of light as part of this spell. The beam is refracted into seven serpents made of solid light, each in its own color of the visible spectrum. The serpents are controlled by the caster. They can fly; they glow their own color; they have a simulacrum of the caster's intelligence and personality. They can be tens of yards long, or as short as a few inches, depending on how long the caster breathed for. Otherwise they are approximately corn snakes. Sythyry invented this spell and is very proud of it.

Dissection Map: Causes a selected organ or other structure in the subject to glow with a mystic light that can be seen (with suitable magic) through several feet of flesh, wood, stone, etc. This in itself is harmless to the subject. The spell is intended to facilitate dissection.

See the Mystic Light: lets the caster (or other chosen person) see the mystic light produced by Dissection Map and the like.

Solid Light Breath: the LightWing caster breathes a beam of light, which becomes a solid substance. The beam can be up to two yards wide and a hundred yards long. The substance is nearly weightless, but otherwise much like chrysotile asbestos. (A dragon caught in the beam might be briefly inconvenienced, but could rip it apart without trouble). The beam lasts for about a week, then becomes light over the course of a day. (This spell is a precursor to Seven Spectral Serpents.)

Photosynthetic Exaggeration / Photosynthetic Excellence: These spells are cast on photosynthetic organisms, usually plants: a tree, a few square yards of grass or pond scum. The caster (usually a LightWing) breathes light upon them, and the subject metabolizes the light at a fantastic rate. The "Exaggeration" form of the spell makes the target grow to several times its normal size: tomatoes the size of basketballs. The "Excellence" form of the spell pushes the target healthily along its normal growth path: a few minutes of light can sprout an acorn into the size of a mature adult oak tree.

Reflectionary, a.k.a. The Disco Ball of Doom: This creates a field that reflects light perfectly. (The field is no stronger than thin glass against sharp blows, though handles uniform pressure, like wind, quite well.) The reflectionary may be used to create simple shapes (planes, paraboloids) or elaborate ones (disco balls, dragons), and may cause the shapes to move or deform in routine ways (spinning disco balls, walking dragons).

Lens In The Clouds: This spell makes a region of space function as a lens, shaped as the caster wishes. The region has no other physical reality. The caster can direct it to move as desired. This spell is intended to make telescopes and microscopes, and is quite precise albeit slow. It can be used as a daytime weapon by making a giant magnifying glass focussed on the victim, though the LightWing caster's natural breath is far more dangerous and likely to hit.

One-Way Light: In the region of this spell, light can only move in a single direction that the user sets initially but may change at will. If you look against that direction, you can see normally. If you look in any other direction, you can't see at all. The region can be quite large: several hundred feet in radius.

Light Sculpture: The caster creates an intangible sculpture of light, either from her own imagination, or by imitating something she is watching. The sculpture can move in a way determined by the casting: either as imagined by the caster, or recording a scene as it occurs. It can repeat its movements in a loop, or on command. (Or it can just stay still.) It can be cast on an object, typically a board or plate, and the image will appear above the plate even if the plate is moved. The spell is intended for making scientific or historical records, or displaying animate structures, though it has other uses as well, as one dragon cheating on her partner discovered to much regret.

Basic Light Manipulation: conjure lights and darknesses, create vague shapes of moving light, etc.

Special Abilities:

Precise, detailed breath-work, including underpowering and focussing her breath.  She
can scorch words into white cloth or paper by breath, or cut a stick of
butter from across the room, or breathe laser-pointer red dots for cats to
chase.  (There's no reason why another dragon couldn't have this power; it's
a matter of practice rather than an innate gift.  But relatively few dragons
work hard on breathing less powerfully.)

Weaknesses:

Sythyry is a coward about combat and will try to get out of it whenever
possible. (She not unusually cowardly about other things.) If she can't
escape, she will lose a conventional combat against any dragon with comparable
or greater strength and skill. (Caveats: she has won mock combats
against dragons half her size and slightly better skills, but that might not
happen in a real fight. Also, losing a fight means getting beaten up and
injured, not necessarily failing at her objective — e.g., if she's trying to
distract a warrior, she may succeed at distracting him by having him beat her
to a pulp.)

Sythyry is one of the physically weakest 10% of LightWings.

Combat Style:

Sythyry is pretty good at dodging and running away.

In the few times that she's had to fight, she has used her anatomy spell to
jam a claw in someplace very unpleasant — like a pressure point, an artery, a
hamstring — and generally tries to make the fight as painful and stupid as
possible. Or she'll just grab a leg in her mouth and hang on. She doesn't
fight to win: she fights to make her opponent that she's annoying to fight.

Background

History: Sythyry is a scientific magicologist, interested in optics and
biology, who trained somewhere appropriate for that, and hasn't been doing
much of interest before now.

RP Sample:

(In this scene I'll play both sides, since Arilash is a NPC. Before this,
Sythyry has invited Arilash out for a picnic, and Arilash has accepted.)

Sythyry unpacks her saddlebags. The appetizer is a venison roulade: thick
slices of raw deer-steak, thin slices of raw deer-liver, and a sprinkling of
basil and lemon verbena and charred salt, rolled up like a jellyroll and
sliced to show a pretty spiral. She arranges the spiral slices on two big
leaves — there's a quick flash of light-breath — and calls to Arilash.

Arilash: "Well, this is certainly quite nice.  Whatever else, you are an
excellent cook."

Sythyry: "I do my best!"

Arilash finishes her appetizer, and glances at her leaf.  "There's something
written on this…?"  She wiped the leaf on the cliff-top moss, and reads I LOVE
YOU, scorched into the leaf.

Sythyry looks Arilash in the face.  Arilash flickers crimson, red, black, and
then forces her coloration to a calm blue.  "Sythyry, we need to talk about
this."

Orange and pale green wander over Sythyry's scales.  "Well, we are talking.
That's why I wrote that."

"Sythyry.  Picnics for two are fine.  Going to the theatre together is fine.
Light sex-play afterwards is approximately fine.  Having an actual
relationship is not fine."

Sythyry becomes a monochrome blue-grey.  "I didn't mean…"

"Yes you did," says Arilash.  "Nobody writes notes like this unless they
mean."

"Can we…or…is there some reason…or…reconsider it or…well…something else…any
chance?", Sythyry says, in the shards of at least four trains of thought.

"Actually we don't need to talk. You aren't talking coherently anyway. We need
to not talk for about two months." She jumped into the air, flying
home, not bothering to look anything but red and black.

Sythyry burns the leaf to ashes with light-breath, and then sits on the moss,
eating the whole generous two-dragon-sized picnic all by herself, wholly
blue-gray.

Sythyry: Draft of a Dragon Empty Re: Sythyry: Draft of a Dragon

I know this is still a draft, but i will give you some feedback for your revision.

We dont really have all the 'magic spells for starting dragons', so you need to be more detailed here. What magic does your dragon know? And when you say 'biological magic', do you just mean animating plants? Because that will fit more with the Earthwings than Lightwings. Generally, more details are better.

Your special ability is fine until you state 'Lots of interesting spells'. Again you have to be specific. Do you just mean 'plant animation'?

Weaknesses, you also need to detail. Simply 'not strong by Lightwing standards' doesnt tell us much. What major flaw does Sythyry have?

Although your combat style is good, I noticed your knowledge on weakpoints is a complete opposite to one of your personalities 'mostly incompetent at fighting'. If she knows those weakpoints, she is definitely not incompetent.

--

Overall, you need more description on Sythyry, but I think this is normal, since this is just a draft at this stage. Hopefully you will find some of my points useful. I will be waiting to RP with Sythyry soon! Smile

Regards,

Because that will fit more with the Earthwings than Lightwings.

So, a Lightwings can't learn to do that? Probably not without talking to EarthWingses a lot, so I'll switch the one who stepped on her to a large FireWing if need be.

If LightWings really can't do biology magic, I'll switch to physics (esp. optics) magic. I do like the idea of my scholar-mage mixing up science and magic, if that is at all possible. I'll come up with a set of representative spells when I get this answer.

Weaknesses, you also need to detail. Simply 'not strong by Lightwing standards' doesnt tell us much. What major flaw does Sythyry have?

(Briefly: "always loses fights", if that's major enough)

Sythyry is a coward about combat and will try to get out of it whenever
possible. (She not unusually cowardly about other things.) If she can't
escape, she will lose a conventional combat against any dragon with comparable
or greater strength and skill. (Caveats: she has won mock combats

About the biological magic, I'm not so sure it's a problem. I'd say it depends on what kind of spells you imagine, and there's probably a reason if you imagined those spells on a Lightwing.
But like Sly said, we need more details on the spells you can cast. Let's face it we don't have a lot of rules about magic, so it could become overpowered way too easily, that's why we need it.

Here are a few spells for calibration; I'm trying to keep in a light theme with some biology. "Dissection Map", not skill, lets Sythyry find pain points and veins in combat. "Seven Spectral Serpents" is her signature spell that she invented.

What sort of "overpowered" are you worried about? killer combat spells?

I'm aiming at spells with substantial and interesting effects, rather than obvious martial or practical use. (But I'm sure they will be useful for something sometime.)

Light breath + science = fun! Here's another pair of spells on that theme.

Photosynthetic Exaggeration / Photosynthetic Excellence: These spells are cast
on photosynthetic organisms, usually plants: a tree, a few square yards of
grass or pond scum. The caster (usually a LightWing) breathes light upon
them, and the subject metabolizes the light at a fantastic rate. The
"Exaggeration" form of the spell makes the target grow to several times its
normal size: tomatoes the size of basketballs. The "Excellence" form of the

of light can sprout an acorn into the size of a mature adult oak tree.

I guess the fear is mostly on killer combat spells, but also on powers that could rival those of gods/semi-gods.
That seems pretty okay for me, just add those powers in your first post and wait to see if the others think like me ^^

Sythyry: Draft of a Dragon Empty Re: Sythyry: Draft of a Dragon

Post by Celestia on Tue Sep 01, 2015 6:36 am

You're just getting the staff cocktail aren't you. Might have something to do with this impressively creative app. I think I'll step in and say a few things.

1. Without a picture for your dragon we are going to need a lot of written detail. You described height, color, and accessories, but we don't have very many specifics like body shape and exact pattern of coloration, though I suppose as a LightWing that could change from day to day and could give you an excuse to add an extra paragraph to every topic. ^.^

2. Aye over powered is one of our concerns but this is relative to your age and practice. Your dragon is 43 and the only thing they do seems to be mostly magic giving you plenty to play around with. I has a feeling over powered is not one of the concerns we are going to have with you but we'd like you to type our your spells regardless.

3. Now it is true dragons from one tribe can't have the special abilities of dragons from another tribe but magic is a whole other ball game. Yes you aren't going to know how to do planty magic nearly as well as the EarthWings could but you could still do quite a bit especially with how good your dragon is at it. For example your dragon should be able to control a bunch of vines to entangle an opponent or hold down a patient rather easily. Part of what I am trying to say is if you want to animate some plant life go for it. We would allow quite a bit more than what you have been presenting to use so far if you so desired.

That's why I was waiting for someone else for additional input ^^
I had indeed forgotten about your age, it's right that you can even afford a few more moves.
(By the way, how come we still have those dragon years after a few topics in which almost everybody agreed they were only a mess ? ><)

And totally unrelated, but your character also have an innate advantage against all people from my native language. You have all the time to beat anyone before they even get the time to pronounce that name correctly >< A "s" followed right after by the feared "th"... that's just plain evil.

1. Without a picture for your dragon we are going to need a lot of written detail. You described height, color, and accessories, but we don't have very many specifics like body shape

Sorry, I'm a writer, not an artist, and I visualize about as well as your average oyster and draw rather worse. I did not know what the dragons of Mating Flight looked like until I got the cover art, and I have no idea what Sythyry looks like either.

Um ... er ... what else should I talk about?

I has a feeling over powered is not one of the concerns we are going to have with you …

I hope so. I admit to having done some D&D and Ars Magica character optimization, back in the day, in games where that was the right thing to do.

For cooperative-ish roleplay, um, I guess I'm still doing character optimization. I'm optimizing for being a friendly and creative reptile who could participate as a useful adjunct to nearly any story, but not take it over. 'Cause that's how I've had the best time in freeform games.

We would allow quite a bit more than what you have been presenting to use so far if you so desired.

I've given you a lot more: the sorts of spells a scientist and scholar would come up with and find useful.

You have all the time to beat anyone before they even get the time to pronounce that name correctly >< A "s" followed right after by the feared "th"... that's just plain evil.

That's time to run away! I don't beat anyone in fights.

Uh, how come I never saw those new posts ? Weird.
For the picture, you don't necessarily need to draw it yourself. Just find an image of a dragon that suits your character at most. Finding an image that you like may even give you some ideas for your own dragon. Try searching on DeviantArt, you should find plenty of them there. Also add what you wrote on your previous message to your appearance, it would be a good beginning.
Even if your coloration does change, you do have a "natural" color, right ? It's the one you have when feeling neutral, or when you are sleeping/unconscious.

Just add these and you're good to go !

The forum won't let me post links. I posted a non-link to a nice Deviation for it.

How's that?

To post images, you just have to use the following code :
Code:

I edited your first post to put the image. Somehow that link allowed to see the image but not to post it on the forum, so I had to find the image and use the static download link ^^
Anyway, APPROVED
